When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. The retention phase lasts for a minimum of 24 months. Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far. Remember to remove your retainer before brushing, and brush your retainer before placing it back in your mouth.
Removable Retainers
Your retainers should be worn at all times with the exception of eating and brushing your teeth. Your retainer should also be removed when participating in sports that require a mouthguard or while swimming. After 12 months of full-time wear, we may revise your retention treatment, allowing the retainer to strictly be worn at night.

Hawley Retainer
This is the most common type of retainer. The Hawley retainer is made of metal wire that surrounds the teeth to retain your new bite. The wire is anchored to a specially-molded acrylic that rests on the roof or floor of the mouth. The acrylic is available in clear, and in a variety of colors and designs, and can also be personalized. It is important that you clean the retainer each night.
Nightguard
A nightguard is used to treat patients that experience bruxism, habitual grinding, gnashing or clenching of the teeth. This condition affects children and adults. As the name indicates, nightguard is worn at night, and is designed to reduce the damage caused by bruxism. Bruxism also causes headaches and pain in the jaw, neck and shoulder. A nightguard provides relief from this pain. This appliance is custom-made. It fits comfortably and cushions your teeth while you sleep.
Essix Retainer
The Essix retainer is a transparent removable retainer that fits over the entire arch of teeth. Similar to Invisalign trays, Essix retainers have no wires. They are inexpensive and easier to wear. They can be used for other treatments as well, including tooth movement and bridges.
